As much as I dislike the fact of gettingolder (I am sure most can empathise); the 50's are very enjoyable. I havealways been a very active person over the years, and when it comes to livinga healthy lifestyle, lots of time at the gym, swimming 1000M most days,plenty of walking etc, all took a high priority.


A couple of years ago I developed quite adiscomfort in my left hip. I attempted to ignore it for some time, but aftermuch deliberation went to see a doctor. After ultra sounds and MRI it wasdiagnosed I had bursitis in that hip joint. I went for cortisone injectionstwice, but found after both times it really did not ease the pain much. Quitea few visits to Physio's trying to correct a lazy gluteus minimus musclebecame a bit frustrating.


Ijust happened throw the word 'bursitis' at the PC one day and came across theOSMO patch web site. Not having anything to lose I immediately ordered 10 ofthe patches. They arrived within a couple of days and I placed a patch on theaffected hip area that first night, then continued for a total of threenights. I was absolutely stunned that after the third application the pain inmy left hip had disappeared. It was a few weeks before I actually felt Ineeded to reapply anymore patches to that area due to a small amount of painreturning. I am assuming that the bursitis problem will always be there,however it is very comforting to know that the OSMO patches extract theexcess fluid from the area so that you can virtually live pain free.

Plantar Fasciitis Taping


There are a number of methods which can be used to reduce the pain from plantar fasciitis. Treating plantar fasciitis usually involves medication to ease the pain. This is most commonly anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) which are helpful in alleviating pain as well as reducing inflammation. Sometimes corticosteroids may be administered either topically or by injection into the plantar fascia directly, although this is usually reserved for only the most severe cases. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) can be used to good effect, with the treatment using painless sound waves to help the healing process.

First check your shoes for too much midfoot flexibility and check your training for changes. A detailed evaluation of changes in your training is necessary. You should start with what is called "relative rest" which means a decrease in workout intensity, duration of session and decrease in the number of sessions per week. The most important part of self treatment for this condition is being sure that your shoes offer sufficient stability and are optimal in controlling the forces that contribute to plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Check your running shoes to make sure that they are not excessively worn. This is vital!

Many people with Plantar Fasciitis experience a sharp heel pain in the morning, when taking the first steps after getting out of bed. This pain comes from the tightening of the plantar fascia that occurs during sleep. Stretching and massaging the plantar fascia before standing up will help reduce heel pain for the rest of your day! Massaging the plantar fascia can be done simply by rolling a tennisball (or rolling pin) under the foot, all the way from the heel to the toes. Keep rolling the ball or pin under the foot for about 5 minutes.

Heel pain is common complaint in runners. Actually, heel pain is common in all people. 40% of all visits to podiatrists in the U.S. are because of heel pain. Of all of the different causes of heel pain, the vast majority is due to a condition known as plantar fasciitis. I tried customized orthotics that I wore in my shoes for a while that seemed to cause more problems than I began with. I got them altered every two weeks but ended up with pain in different and additional places in my foot. The Strassburg Sock helped some but it wasn't that comfortable to sleep in. Its a sock with a strap that pulls your foot toward your shin that helps stretch out the bottom of your foot. My foot felt a little better but I was not well rested, so not worth the trade off.

Patients with low arches theoretically have a decreased ability to absorb the forces generated by the impact of foot strike. 5 The three most commonly used mechanical corrections are arch taping, over-the-counter arch supports and custom orthotics. Arch taping and orthotics were found to be significantly better than use of NSAIDs, cortisone injection or heel cups in one randomized treatment study. 8 Arch taping was cited by 2 percent of patients as the treatment that worked best for plantar fasciitis in another study. 3 A single taping treatment is much less expensive than an over-the-counter arch support or an orthotic.

Stretching the calf muscles is an important part to reducing plantar fascia tension. The calf muscles, including the gastroc and soleus, attach to the back of the heel. Tension from these muscles pulls back on the heel, causing tension on the plantar fascia. A great way to stretch the calf the first thing in the morning, before you take your first steps, is to hook a towel on the ball of your foot and while keeping the knee straight pull back on the towel. Diagnostic testing is rarely indicated for the initial evaluation and treatment of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is often called “heel spurs,” although this terminology is somewhat of a misnomer because 15 to 25 percent of the general population without symptoms have heel spurs and many symptomatic individuals do not. 2 Heel spurs are bony osteophytes that can be visualized on the anterior calcaneus on radiography. However, diagnostic testing is indicated in cases of atypical plantar fasciitis, in patients with heel pain that is suspicious for other causes ( Table 1 ) or in patients who are not responding to appropriate treatment.

Should all other attempts to resolve Plantar Fasciitis prove unsuccessful, surgery or corticosteroid injections may be indicated. Corticosteroid injections can be helpful in the short- term for pain relief. Unfortunately the fundamental problem is not addressed and therefore recurrence rates can be quite high. There are a number of different options for surgical intervention, each with varying results. Options for surgical intervention include the Topaz procedure, Plantar Fascia release procedure, and ultrasound guided needle fasciotomy. Surgery is typically a last-ditch effort to correct for Plantar Fasciitis The more invasive surgeries run the risk of nerve damage and infection. Surgery should only be considered after all conservative measures have been exhausted.
